Federal prosecutors have charged Howard Solomon, the former executive director of the East Oakland Boxing Association (EOBA), with mail fraud and tax evasion, alleging he embezzled over $125,000 from the nonprofit. Among the funds misappropriated was a $50,000 donation from Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry and his wife, Ayesha Curry, presented during a 2019 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

 Details of the Case

Role at EOBA: Solomon served as executive director from 2017 to 2021, managing daily operations, staff, finances, and fundraising efforts. He had unrestricted access to EOBA’s bank accounts and debit cards.

Alleged Misuse of Funds: Prosecutors claim Solomon used EOBA funds for personal expenses, including:

  1.   Purchasing a Ford Explorer and later trading it for a Cadillac Escalade.
  2.   Paying for a vacation rental property.
  3.   Making personal Amazon purchases, such as a queen-size bed and memory foam mattress.

Stephen Curry Donation: The Currys donated $50,000 on Ellen’s Greatest Night of Giveaways to support EOBA’s youth programs. Instead of directing the funds to the nonprofit, Solomon allegedly deposited the check into his personal account.

 Charges and Legal Proceedings

– Solomon has been charged with one count of mail fraud and four counts of tax evasion for underreporting taxable income between 2018 and 2021.

– He waived indictment by a grand jury and pleaded not guilty during his court appearance on March 3, 2025.

Penalties

Mail Fraud: Up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 or twice the value of the property involved.

Tax Evasion: Up to five years in prison and a fine of $100,000 per count.

The case highlights significant breaches of trust in nonprofit management and misuse of charitable donations intended to benefit underserved youth in Oakland.
